Freeware tools and useful
information
These are the latest tools for
download. They’re all freeware and can be used without fear of retribution!
In most cases (when possible), I’ve included the link to the
developer/distributor website to ensure that you download the latest version
and get the most current support information. Hope these help.
Also...If you come across a bad link or have something to add/update, please
take a moment and send me a quick email.

Study tools
9300 routing switch
emulator
About: This emulator approximates
the operation of a 9300-series routing switch and, therefore, should be used
only as a study tool.
It defaults to the Foundry product name but it’s the same as the firmware for
HP. The emulator is for an early version of the 07.x firmware; so, it
may not be exactly like the most current version of firmware. And, like most
emulators, it does not allow every available command...but it does a
very good job.
Important note: If you find that the emulator differs from the
courseware, then always follow the courseware...because it provides the
information that is fair-game on the exam.

Configuration and
support docs
RADIUS server setup
procedures
About: Written by Jimmy Ray Purser, an HP SA out of Chicago. This document contains
step-by-step instructions for configuring a RADIUS server and a switch to
support 802.1x authentication. It’s the first REALLY useful paper I’ve
come across on the subject. If you have not configured this before, you
should try it out on a non-production server. By the way, if you have any
related information on 802.1x, PLEASE email it to me so that I can include it
here. (JohnL@pgcgi.com)

TFTPD32n tftp server
About: This is
updated version of the TFTP software includes basic syslog, DHCP (very useful
in lab testing when you don’t want to mess with Win 2K) and an SNTP server.
Note about the SNTP: On XP and Win2k, it may conflict with the native Windows
Time Services. Optionally, you can disable these services within
Windows.

TERA TERM terminal
emulation
About: This terminal
emulation program works great. It’s an Open Source program and can be
downloaded from many sites...do a Google search for more sites, if needed.
BTW...this site has a lot of other great freeware and shareware tools. Check ‘em
out.

KIWI SYSLOG and other
useful tools
About: Kiwi Syslog is

and other fancy things, you’re going to have to pay for it. Check out the
other Kiwi tools. Good stuff.

Wireshark protocol
analyzer
About: Once Ethereal;
now Wireshark. This is an open source network protocol analyzer for most
platforms. It allows you to examine data from a live network or from a
capture file on disk. You can interactively browse the capture data, viewing
summary and detail information for each packet. Wireshark has several
powerful features, including a rich display filter language and the
ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session.
